We are emotional beings by design and, even at our healthiest, we are meant to feel life, both the good and the bad. Sometimes, however, feelings can become disordered. Our concerns grow into anxiety, hope dwindles into depression, anger begins to control us. Whatever the emotion, only the God who made us, body and soul, can reorder these feelings back to his design, so they no longer keep us from living for him.

Few things are more essential to life than relationships, and even fewer have so much potential for pain. Oneness between spouses, trust between friends, peace in a household - these gifts are precious yet fragile, easily broken by betrayal, divorce, deceit, and conflict. The God of peace is in the business of reconciliation, teaching and empowering his people to forgive, make peace, and restore what has been broken by sin.

Children, like marriage, are one of the greatest blessings a person can have in this life. At the same time, children have a unique ability to break their parents’ hearts. Whether a child is suffering, straying, contentious, or out of control, parenting leaves us feeling inadequate and helpless, humbling us. This prepares us to turn away from ourselves to God’s Word and Fatherly care, which are full of wisdom for the impossible task of raising our beloved, foolish children in a fallen world.

We were made to live wholeheartedly for God alone, depending on him and orienting our lives to his will. Yet without realizing, we often turn to other things instead, looking to ordinary gifts like food, sex, alcohol, and drugs to provide what only God can give. In the end, we become enslaved. Yet, in his mercy, God gives us something better than disease management. Granting forgiveness, power, and new desires through the gospel, we learn to fight against the old desires of the flesh and find superior pleasure in God himself.

Business, plumbing, art, homeschooling - work of any kind is vulnerable to the “thistles and thorns” of the Fall of man. Anxiety, burnout, frustration, selfish ambition, conflict - work is full of hazards, but the answer isn’t cynicism, to “live for the weekend” or quit working altogether. Instead, work requires a God-given perspective that honestly addresses the challenges while giving us new purpose and motivation.
Our relationship with money is likewise fraught with difficulty. Spending, saving, giving, debt - Scripture offers a wealth of wisdom on stewardship and frees us to live for something far greater than money - the kingdom of God.

Whether ordinary challenges of diet and exercise or crises like chronic sickness, self-harm, and the death of a loved one - dealing with our bodies can be profoundly emotional and become real trials of faith. Christ, fully God and Man, affirms both the goodness of the body as well as its weakness and pain. In compassion, we can learn from him how to glorify God with our bodies, whether in sickness or in health.

Although everything in life involves the spiritual to some degree, some problems are uniquely spiritual - sin, guilt, shame, doubt, scrupulous consciences. It’s not always easy to work out repentance, faith, and obedience in daily practice. And church hurt is especially challenging, since those you normally seek for help seem unsafe. Such things are best worked out in a safe relationship over time, rooted in the gospel of Christ.

Originally, the term “psyche” meant “soul” in biblical Greek, referring to the whole internal person, synonymous with a person’s “spirit.” Modern psychology, however, has stripped the idea of its rich spiritual dimension and made it a scientific matter. While there is a place for psychiatric observation and diagnosis, it’s essential for them to be understood within a spiritual context, so the redeeming power of the gospel may be applied.
